I think you've got a good start on this, and if you practice you can really develop your eye I have a few suggestions for you however.

Composition - you should really do your best to compose the shot in the camera. the less you have to crop the better. When you are taking a photo try and divide it into thirds, 3 sections from left to right and 3 seconds from top to bottom and try and place your subject on one of the places where the lines cross

Focus - When you are photographing a flower you want to focus on only the flower. Everything in the background is just clutter. You can really easily change that by opening up your lens, which is called opening your aperture. I'm not sure what camera you are using, but it might have different modes, one of them should be 'ortrait' mode and that will help you make the background blurry so you only see the flower.
